JT 17 This historic photograph depicts the very early days of the newly formed "Kitchener's Army", 14th (Service) battalion of the Durham Light Infantry Regiment. The photograph was most probably taken in September/October 1914. All of these young men were volunteers who eagerly responded to Kitchener's "pointing finger posters" etc. It can be seen that many of them have not been issued with a uniform and those that have, are wearing the much despised "Kitchener's Blues" temporary uniform. Also it is possible to see that very few rifles are to be seen due to shortages and those that are visible are of an early vintage. Perhaps proof of the relatively untrained status of the soldiers seen here is the fact that many of those who were armed are carelessly pointing their guns at the photographer, plus one man appears to have his rifle pointed at his comrades head!

JT 11 This photograph is of one officer, NCO's and men of the 14th (Service) Battalion The Durham Light Infantry Regiment. The date of the photo is uncertain but it may have been taken in late 1914 or early 1915 as none of the men appear to have been awarded "wound stripes" or "good conduct chevrons" (cloth badges worn on the lower tunic sleeve). John Chew Robinson can be seen on the second row from the front, and sixth from the right.
