KEITH SHELVEY'S RUTLAND WAR MEMORIALS PROJECT
What Keith said about his project.
"I am a member of the Spalding & South Lincs. branch of the Western Front Association and go on two weekend trips a year. I have just returned from a trip to France which included visiting Compiegne,Pierrefonds,Soissons and Villers-Cotterets.
My main interest is the war memorials of Rutland. I became interested when I found out that my Grandfather's brother was killed on the Somme in 1916. My grandmother had a picture of him, but nobody knew anything about where he was killed apart from the general area of the Somme.
I started with the memorial at Morcott, Rutland, and recorded the names on it. I checked for details of the names on the C.W.G.C site. The C.W.G.C. site returned the date that my Gt. Uncle was killed and that he was in the 8th Btn. of The Leicestershire Regiment and that his body was not found. I found later that my Gt.Uncle was killed in the area of Bazentin-le-Petit village.
I am now taking photos (as and when I have the time) of all the war memorials in Rutland. At this time I have photographed the memorials of seven villages, but I do need to see the interiors of the Churches to record the memorials that may be inside".Keith Shelvey.
