Photo Odd1  All that is known about this wonderful scan is that the photo may well have been taken in Derbyshire. Can anyone spot a "just came back from the pub" relative? Can anyone identify the car and its probable date of birth ? My guesstimate is Renault, Born circa 1910 and the men, 10 Pints of bitter each! Photo OD2 This photograph was sent in by TREV MARSHALL of Canada. Trevs E-mail address is :-marsht@direct.ca This is what Trev wrote about the image. "I previously did some research on this old jalopy, apparently these old buses were sent over to France during the First World War to transport troops. The One shown is called "OLD BILL" we think this was a Wedding party, possibly my Grandfather/Grandmother. Can anyone hazard a guess when the photograph was taken and does anyone recognise the building at the back of the photograph, there appear to be tramlines at the front of the vehicle. The photograph was takensomewhere in Nottingham."

Photo SCH 1 Please contact Roger Capewell at :- militaryphotos@capefam.freeserve.co.uk This one is not "Odd" at all but I did not have a proper section for it. This grand photograph belongs to a neighbour and friend that has just started in family history research. Good hunting Sue and Ross ! One of Sue's gems of photographs is this one that was taken in 1925 at MANSFIELD WOODHOUSE Church of England School. The board that one of the children is holding states this, and it also appears to read " S--? 6-7. There are 37 recognisable children on the image plus 3 staff. Do you recognise anyone here? Susan's relative EDNA HEMMINGS is , 3rd. row from the front and 5th. in from the left. Sue would be delighted to hear from anyone with further information.

Photos BELLE 1, BELLE 2, BELLE 3 & BELLE 4. Please reply to Mike Yegwart at: - mike.yegwart@btinternet.com

Mike Yegwart has sent 4 Edwardian or Victorian photographs of a beautiful young lady who was a circus performer and was known as "La Belle Duchess". Mike would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help with information regarding "La Belle Duchess" or the photographs.

Following is what Mike wrote about the photographs and "La Belle Duchess".

La Belle Duchess - a Beautiful Mystery

These four photographs represent the sum total of knowledge about this young lady. John Turner from the Circus Friends Association has been unable to help me identify her. There is no family story to help nor any clue as to her real name. There is a possibility that she is a HANDS originally from around Redditch, Worcestershire. However, my guess is that she is a HUMPHRIES. This means that the family left Meifod in Montgomeryshire, Wales in about the 1840s and went to Bilston, Staffordshire. By the 1881 census they were in Manchester. Over the next 2 or 3 years some brothers went to
Texas, U.S.A. One returned, I think to Manchester. Another brother, ended up in the1930s around Lichfield in Staffordshire. Of course the term auntie, on "BELLE 1", might be "politeness", as when she says "cousin" on "BELLE 4" she, to my mind, looks a little older. If anyone knows or has any ideas on how to resolve this problem I would be
pleased to hear from you.

PLEASE CLICK ON THE (Blue) PHOTO TITLES BELOW TO VIEW EACH SCAN

  1. Photo BELLE 1 Has inscribed on the back "To darling Auntie with love from
Duchess." A postcard published by J. Russell & Sons, Crystal Palace.
  2. Photo BELLE 2 Is a postcard with no details on the rear. (There is a printed
note, which may help date says, "THIS SPACE, as well as the back, MAY NOW BE
USED FOR COMMUNICATION, but for inland only."
  3. Photo BELLE 3 On the rear of this photograph, written in "biro" probably 50 or 60
years after it was taken, is La Belle Duchess, niece of Arthur HANDS great
grand parents. She appears to be smoking a cigar or cigarette!

4. Photo BELLE 4 is a photograph taken by Moffatt in Edinburgh.
