Please contact Harvey and Eileen Bates at:- bateshe@senet.com.au Harvey sent this great Victorian portrait of his Grandfather CHARLES BATES of the 1st Battalion THE LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. Charles lived at MOUNTSORREL, Leicestershire, England. Charles Bates was born in 1866 and first volunteered to the Leicestershire Regiment at Loughborough in 1885 as a Bandsman. (He had played the E flat bass in the Mountsorrel Town Band since the age of 15.) Charles is pictured here (circa 1888) wearing the Leicestershire Regiment bandsmans uniform, his cap was the Glengarry type and the badge is one of the Glengarry cap badges that was issued to the soldiers of that Regiment between 1878 and 1881, but it was clearly still in use at that later date. Charles was to see action with his Regiment during the Boer War and fought at Ladysmith. He left the Regiment sometime after the Boer War but volunteered to his Regiment as a Territorial Force soldier of the 5th Battalion. Please see "Photo CBATE 2" on Photo page 102.
One of the Glengarry cap badges issued to the 17th Regiment of Foot (Leicestershire) between (1878 and 1881. See Photo CBATE 1 above)
