Photo 2nd LEIC
Please contact Michael Jones at :- mjrmjones@optusnet.com.au This is a wonderful pre-World War One group photograph of 100 men (possibly a "Company") of the LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. The Soldiers were almost certainly of the 2nd Battalion as the photograph was taken in INDIA (the 2nd Battalion were stationed in India from 1906 until September 1914). Michael purchased this fine photograph whilst in Leicester in 1988. Please note that Michael has no information whatever concerning the Soldiers seen in the photograph but he would very much like to hear from anyone who recognises any of the Soldiers or can add information about the photo. The photograph is extremely "sharp" and the soldiers faces can be seen clearly so I have uploaded a very large version to aid identification. (Please see below).NEWS! 6th Oct. 2002. Stewart Perkins has been able to identify his Uncle SERGEANT 8751 EDWARD PERKINS of the 2nd Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment. There are three officers to the front of the group (the only Soldiers wearing caps), and Sergeant Perkins is seated 2nd right from the officer seated right. From records that Stewart has that give the date of promotion to Sergeant of Edward Perkins, Stewart has been able to date the photograph to between 22nd July 1914 and October 1914 when the Battalion left India for France.
Sergeant Edward Perkins was transferred to the 7th (Service) Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment and promoted to Company Sergeant Major. In 1915 the 7th Battalion were heavily involved in the terrible action at Bazentin Ridge in July 1916. At Bazentin the battalion (of approx. 1,000 men at full strength) lost 582 men killed or wounded including all of their officers. When the officers of the 7th battalion were lost during that awful battle it fell to the senior NCO's to command and C.S.M. Perkins was of course one of these. Eventually C.S.M. Perkins was himself very seriously wounded whilst rallying his men, and died on the 18th of July 1916 of his injuries.

Photo AHEBURN
Please contact Alan Hebburn at:- alan.hebburn@ntlworld.com This portrait is of Alan's Great Grandfather HENRY JOHN HEBBURN of the PRINCE of WALES'S OWN (WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT). Henry originally served with his Regiment from 1893 to 1909 and took part in the Boer War (1899 -1902). He also served in the Great War (1914 -18). As can be seen in the photograph Henry wears the single chevron on his right arm of a Lance-Corporal and two "Good Conduct" chevrons on his left forearm. Two good conduct chevrons were usually awarded after six years service and a third was added after ten years good service. It could well be that the photograph dates from circa 1899 as Henry does not wear any (Boer War) medal ribbons.Any information would be most welcome.
