CAROL E. VALANTINE DUGGER of the U.S.A. Carol's e-mail address is :- cvdugger@ix.netcom.com

This painting is most likely to be from the late 1880's period. It depicts Carol's Great Uncle, EDWARD A. VALANTINE of the 3rd. Hussars. Family legend suggests that Edward served with the 3rd. Hussars in the Sudan War. He apparently carried a saber scar on his face and was eventually pensioned ? (I wonder if he was a Chelsea Pensioner ?) due to suffering deafness from artillery fire. This incredible soldier eventually found his way to the U.S.A. and took part in "Wild Bill Hickock's Wild West Show" (did it not come to England at some time ?) Edward was possibly born in London, England but may well have had connections to the English Midland's. Carol would welcome information about her Great Uncle, His possible rank, The 3rd. Hussars, The Sudan War, Wild Bill Hickock's Show etc.

Photo GBH 1 This WW1 group photograph was sent in by SIMON HICKINBOTHAM who can be contacted at :- sjh@minster.cs.york.ac.uk the photograph depicts (seated left) Simons Grandfather, GILBERT BOSTOCK HICKINBOTHAM with three unknown comrades. Gilbert was a Leicestershire man who was a member of the Royal Engineers Regiment, his regimental number was 94769. Gilbert saw action in France and was gassed and also suffered shell shock, he eventually died in 1941 at the age of 46. Gilbert was born in August 1895, at Castle Donnington, Leicestershire. His mother and Father where Vincent & Clara Hickinbotham. Simon would welcome any information what so ever about his Grandfather, his WW1 unit, and his comrades depicted here. Perhaps the arm bands seen on the men's uniforms could be a clue ? Simon has a web page with more details concerning his Grandfather and also "close ups" of the insignia the soldiers are to be seen wearing in this photograph. Please take the time to visit Simon's web site which can be found at :- http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~sjh/bertie/
