This portrait is of Liz's relative Captain SYDNEY TRUMAN DUROSE of the 2/7th (Robin Hood) Battalion SHERWOOD FORESTERS. (note: I believe that the 2/7th Batt. was a City of He was killed in action April 2nd 1917, at le Verguier France. Following is an extract from Nottingham Guardian 12 April 1917

"Roll of Honour, Captain S T Durose, of the Robin Hoods, wounded and missing. Last night's casualty lists showed the following losses:- OFFICERS: Dead 47; wounded or missing 57. RANK AND FILE: Dead 209; wounded or missing 780.

CAPTAIN S.T. DUROSE Captain Sidney T Durose, of the 2/7th (Robin Hood) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, who is reported wounded and missing form April 2nd, is the only son of Mr. Arthur Durose, F.C.A. formerly of Nottingham, but recently removed to Radlett, Herts. He joined the O.T.C. of the Nottingham University College immediately after the outbreak of war and was granted his commission on October 6th 1914. He went out to the western Front to the first line of the Robin Hood Battalion under Colonel Brewill, D.S.O., and served four months when he was granted leave of absence and developed trench fever; on recovery he served in the home units until February this year, when he again went out with the second line Battalion in command of C Company under Lieut.-Col Rayner D.S.O. He is 24 years of age. He was promoted to captaincy in October 1915. Other officers of the Sherwood's were included in last night's casualties under the heading wounded. They were Captain G. J. Edmunds, Lieutenant and Adjutant J. P. Maine, and Second Lieutenant H. J. Adcock."

Liz wrote " Sydney's mother was ANNIE M TRUMAN. His sister Irene married a man called PHILIP GRINLING, and when her father died in 1930, she was living in Grantham. I would dearly love to contact any descendants of Irene". Can you help Liz with any other information about Captain Durose or Annie Truman and Philip Grinling ?"

My great uncle WILLIAM JACKSON born 1884 OF WILLASTON, NR. NESTON, CHESHIRE, England is standing third from right back row. Under this photo is written, 'TRANSVAAL POLICE, ROODIPORT District, Winning Team of Dorysmt's Cup. 1908-1910. Transvaal, Bisley.'William was a ? Major in the SOUTH AFRICAN RIFLES in the Boer War. He was also in the QUEENS DRAGOON GUARDS at some stage in his career. William was killed in France in 1917 . Can you help Sandra with any new information or do you perhaps recognise any of his comrades?

Ralph found this WW1 era photograph in a family "treasure trove" , he has no idea who these soldiers were or what units they belonged to. My inexpert opinion, is that the soldier to the left (sitting) is of the Hampshire Regiment and the soldier to the right is of an Artillery Regiment, and possibly, an Artillery "Driver". Ralph and I would love to read other (and better) opinions please. Do you recognise either of these young men?
