Photo DNM 1 Please contact Donald M. Norrie at > mnorrie@telusplanet.net This what Donald wrote about this photograph. "My father; MALCOLM MCBEAN NORRIE (1899 -1950) served as a Driver with the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery, 26 July 1915 - 21 May 1919 and served at both Ypres and Mons. He enlisted 2 days short of his 15th birthday! I found this photo in the family trunk many years after father was killed in an auto accident. None of the soldiers in the photo are identified except father who is sitting on the ground on the left of the sign (as we view the photo) . I suspect this photo was taken at the home of the Artillery in Woolwich because the sign has the date 1919, and father was discharged there on 21 May 1919. I am fortunate enough to also have his "Certificate of Transfer to Reserve on Demobilisation". Artillery "Drivers" during WW1, moved the cannons and caissons to the front and rear by horse. He would usually be mounted on the left lead horse. It was during this time that my father met some Canadian soldiers who told him that a man with his horsemanship could find a good life in Canada. In 1923 he immigrated, and never returned again to the UK. He served also in the RCAF in WW2. I send you this photo in hopes that some of your viewers can find a relative of theirs or help identify some of the others in the picture. " (The plaque that the soldiers are holding says "A SUB 161 Bde. R.F.A. 1919" ) To view a larger version of this photograph please click here DNM1
