Photo DTODD Please contact Jonathan Walker at :- jonathan@walker23.fsnet.co.uk This is what Jonathan wrote about this photograph , " All I really know about this photo is that it is of my Grandfather DAVID TODD who lived in South Shields, Co Durham " I suggested to Jonathan that his Grandfather was most likely to have been in a mounted unit or perhaps a R.H.A. or R.A. 'Driver' during WW1. This was Jonathan's reply " I have no idea how to verify the suggestions you make, but I do have a vague recollection of my mum saying that he was involved with horses. I have another photo of him in a carnival with his horse & wagon (not in uniform). He was a Cartman by trade & later it appears a miner as I have a photo of him with a group of 'fellow miners' but I know not from which mine , except that it is probably in the South Shield's, Co. Durham area. His wife FRANCES JANE TODD (nee NORTON) who died in 1916.

Can you offer Jonathan any information or advice please ?

Photo TON 1 Please contact :-

Toni Evans at :- toni.evans@xtra.co.nz

This great mid 19th Century photograph was kindly sent to me by post from New Zealand by Toni. The photo is dated provisionally at circa 1855 and is of a British Regiment or unit, the unit may well be a Rifle may be a Rifle Brigade etc. The only identified soldier in this photograph is RICHARD TUCKEY and he is on the back row and second from the right. Richard Tuckey was born in 1828 at Hayden, Wiltshire, England. Richards parents were Richard Tuckey (Snr.) and Mary Matthews.

News; Chris Coogan had a look at the above photograph and this is a copy of his very helpful reply to Toni Evans

"I believe this photo to depict a group of Rifle Volunteers in the 1860s. Very many 'corps' of RVs were established all over England, Scotland & Wales from 1859 onwards, when the govt. gave permission for units of part-time citizen soldiers to be formed under the power of each County Lord Lieutenant. Like this one, most units at first adopted grey uniforms with coloured facings, and other decoration, with French-style 'kepis', or small peaked caps. Though I happen to have a little knowledge about my own county's uniforms at this early period, not much detail is generally available across the board on all counties. If Richard Tuckey was a Wiltshire resident at this time, then I would guess that this has to be a Wiltshire unit. If there is a photographer's address somewhere on it, or if you know where he lived at this time, I may be able to guess a little more...! Best wishes, Chris Coogan. " Thank you Chris !

I have divided this picture into larger sized sections, (right and left) to view these sections see below.

michuk1@lineone.net This is what Michelle wrote about this photograph, " Hello, attached is a scan of my Gt. Grandfather CHARLES R. DALE, he is believed to have been in the Territorial's, but we are not sure, perhaps you maybe be able to confirm this from the photo, he is the one 2nd from left (looking at photo) sitting down, (without jacket on) we don't know anybody else on the photo. Many thanks.

Can anyone help Michelle with information please ? Do you recognise any of the other soldiers or their Regiment or unit ?
