This is what John wrote about this (second) photograph of his Grandfather, " Here is the second photo of my grandfather. Again, where was it taken, and is it the uniform of an officer of the Australian Light Horse in 1917? even though he never attained a commissioned rank! He was born in Calcutta, India and moved to Australia in November, 1884. I am trying to find the details of his early life - the time before he was married in Australia in 1887. In 1917, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces at the age of 54, although he stated it to be 44. On the enlistment papers he stated that he had been a member of the 21st Lancers for 6 years. Family anecdote tells of his involvement in the Battle of Omdurman in the Sudan. I have been unable to verify any of this. In the AIF, he was sent to Egypt and was demobilised there at the end of the war. I am looking for information regarding his uniforms and the location of the photos."

Can you help John to unravel the mystery of his Grandfather's uniform please?

Ruth wrote, "My father's name was William Stanley George, born South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia . on 6th September 1885. Came to England 1907 qualified as doctor and was in general practice in Hampstead, London at the time of his call up. I have the original letter from the War Office dated 25th April 1917. It said, "Your appointment will take effect from the 14th May, 1917 on which date you should join at Blackpool, and report to the Officer Commanding R.A.M.C. Training Centre." Here is a photo of a group of R.A.M.C. officers with whom he obviously worked. The group of nine includes a quartermaster, pathologist and padre". (Lt. George is second right (seated) in this photograph).

Can you help with any information that may be of interest to Ruth? Do you recognise any of the officers in this photograph? To view a larger version of this image please click here > RAMC 1

Malcolm wrote, "The Farrar boys are the uncles of another close friend John Farrar".

John Farrar wrote, "I enclose pictures of GEORGE AND BILL (William) FARRAR. George was in the IRISH GUARDS and had his horse shot from under him when towing heavy guns. He lost a leg and was awarded the Military Medal. Bill I think was also involved with horses but the family had no contact with him after the war".

Can you help John with information of any kind please?
