Photo CRSN 2 Please contact Christine Normington at > copernicus.n@ntlworld.com This what Christine wrote about this photograph and the one below (CRSN 1), "Two photographs of my grandfather and his Army Corps I don't know which man is him, but we think it's most likely the chap lounging in the bottom right hand corner with his face away from camera. I would love to know who the other men are. At the top of his discharge papers (I have the original) is written in red letters, "R.A.M.C. R.O (4050)" would this be the regiment?
My grandfather, MATTHEW ROBERTSON SWAN, was born in Paisley on September 30th 1887. He died at 22 SOLON ROAD, BRIXTON, LONDON on 23 March 1952.
His army form tells me No. 114751 private Matthew Robertson Swan was a waiter prior to his enlistment, Height 5ft 8ins, Complexion fair, Eyes blue, Hair fair, Identification marks:- Dentifrice upper jaw. His conduct was satisfactory and he was trained in first aid and ambulance duties. He served 231 days, plus 1 year 80 days in the Army Reserve before being invalid out as being "no longer fit for War service", on 12 December, 1917."

(Note: I believe that "RAMC RO" may well be "The ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, (ROOM ORDERLY)" Can anyone please confirm this or suggest another title please?)

NEWS: 26 May 2000 Iain Kerr kindly sent the following to Christine, " If you have not been told it actually stand for RAMC RECORDS OFFICE, the authority for discharges and the original holder of his documents." Thank you Iain!
