Photo VARAL 1 Please contact Valerie Ralston at :-http://www.virgin.net/ Valerie sent in this great photograph which was taken in LUCKNOW, INDIA. Valerie found it in an old family album recently, but does not know who the soldiers were or which Scottish Regiment they were serving with.

Can you help with the Regimental identification? Perhaps you recognise one or all of the soldiers?

New information 6 July 2000 CHRIS COOGAN kindly sent the following information,

" Just a quick note to comment on photo VARAL 1 -
I think these are men of 1ST BATTALION. THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY, which was in India from Oct.1904 to Aug.1914. Hope this may be of some help at least. best wishes, Chris."

Thank you Chris !

Photo MTN 1 Please contact Valerie Martin at :- ValerieMartin@webtv.net This is a portrait of Corporal REGINALD SIDNEY WILLIAM MARTIN of the SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY. He later became Regimental Sergeant -Major Martin M.M. of the 1st battalion THE LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT. Here are the details,

" Reginald was born in 1898 and lived his early life in CHANDLERS FORD, HAMPSHIRE. When the Great War broke out, he was a cabin boy sailing to Africa and back on the Armadale Castle out of Southampton. He lied about his age and joined the S.L.I. in 1914. During the war, he won a Military Medal. He was transferred to the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment before the end of the war and served with them for about 20 years. In the 1920's he had occasion to be an escort to The Price of Wales in Lincoln. He was also chosen to place a wreath on a memorial to the allies with Russia's Marshall Zhukov. This was in a newsreel, which his family saw in the cinema. He finished his career as a Regimental Sergeant Major after 34 years service. "

Valerie would be most grateful for any other information about her father or his Regiments.

Photo PKESS 1 Please contact Peter Kessler at :-
plk33@tesco.net This portrait is of Peter's Grandfather CHARLES KESSLER, which shows him in World War I uniform. Peter wrote, "Charles was in France from at least the end of 1916 until about midway through 1917, at sometime during his service he lost a leg. But that's it. I don't know if he volunteered or was conscripted (he was already a 37 year-old father of two and greengrocer). I don't know what sort of damage was done to his leg, or where he was hospitalised, or anything about what would have happened to him after receiving the wound. And most importantly, I don't know his regiment."

Unfortunately the portion of the photograph (right shoulder) which appears to show Charles's Regimental insignia is very blurred, but it may be a Fusilier Regiment. Do you recognise this soldier? Can you help Peter with any information or clues please?
