Please contact John B. Price at :- j.b.price@juno.com This is what John wrote about the photograph, " The information which has been furnished is as follows: The photograph shows ten members of the Royal Artillery, possibly a gun crew. In the center is a sergeant, with a lance-bombardier seated on each side of him. The lance-bombardier seated on the left side of the sergeant is FRANK ROBERTS AMBLER. It is believed that the strap running from right shoulder to left side on nine of the crew was for a gas mask, and that this would suggest that the photograph was taken about 1916.Confirmation of these facts and any further information would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. With kind regards, John B. Price"To view a larger version of this photograph please click here > JBPR 1
Photo MICC 1 Please contact Michael Cross at :-jolimetz@ntlworld.com Standing on the left in this photograph is Michael's great Uncle ABEL NEWMAN who was a member of the QUEENS OWN OXFORDSHIRE HUSSARS during WW1. This what Michael wrote about this and the following photograph, "Abel Newman was my Grandmother's brother, she told me tales about him going to war right up to her passing. He gets a mention in 'Lifting the Latch', a fascinating book about Mont Abbott an earthy Oxfordshire man in the period from pre-1914 up to the 1980s. From these sources I know that Abel was a territorial who was called up at the outbreak of war, and rode away with the Oxfordshire Hussars taking one of his employer's horses. He had a nickname of Pommel - don't know why.
The first picture is of Abel (left) with two colleagues named Ernest (sitting & with two stripes) and René. Abel is on the left. Picture two has Abel top left and I reckon René bottom right (not really sure; looks like the same face). I take this to be his Section, if that is how Hussars were organised, with their Officers and dog in the centre.
Any explanations /corrections welcome. Abel did survive the war. "Michael tells me that the Queens Own Oxfordshire Hussars were known in WW1 as the "Queer Objects On Horseback!" Michael also pointed out that the Q.O.O.H. have an excellent web site at :-http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/yeomindx.htm with a listing of all casualties in the Great War.
