Photo Page 95

Photo RWG 1 Please contact Roger Capewell at > roger@militaryimages.org.uk This great WW1 photograph is used with the kind permission of Andrew Thornton. The photo shows a group of 29 LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT soldiers who seem to have just completed a route march. The soldiers cap badges show that they were of a Territorial Battalion and most probably of the 1/4th Battalion or the 1/5th Battalion. If you recognise any of the men seen in the photograph or if you can offer any information about the image I would be very interested to hear from you.

Photo RWG 2 Please contact Roger Capewell at > roger@militaryimages.org.uk This is another photograph from Andrew Thornton. Featured in this image is the famous WW1 LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT soldier Private 6276 WILLIAM BUCKINGHAM V.C. The hero is seen in this picture (seated right) with an unknown R.A.M.C. (Royal Army Medical Corps) soldier and 4 nurses. The photograph was taken inside a building that had a connection to a railway company. This may have been during one of the recruiting drives that Pte. Buckingham agreed to do for his Regiment in 1915. William Buckingham V.C. was awarded the Victoria Cross for acts of bravery near Neuve Chapelle (Western Front) in March 1915. He later volunteered to rejoin his Regiment in France and Flanders and was killed whilst in action with the 1st Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment on the 15th of September 1916.

William Buckingham was born in Leicester and lived at Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. If you can offer any information about the people seen in this photograph, I would be very pleased to hear from you.
