"As many of the soldiers in the area we are interested in, (Rutland and Leicestershire) were killed on the Somme,I have sent you two pictures of the Thiepval memorial. I took these in April 1998 on my first trip.

The construction of the memorial was started thirteen years after the battle and took four years to build. The finished memorial is 150 feet high. There are sixteen piers with a 123 separate units where some 73,000 British names are recorded. Thiepval can be seen for miles around in that area."
